One of the aspects that keeps your skin healthy is the Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF) which is produced by skin cells. NMF plays an important role in skin hydration.
NMF is found in the epidermis, the topmost layer of skin which acts as a barrier, preventing moisture loss aka Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL) and preventing microbial contamination.
According to the Beauty Brains, a healthy level of NMF is important especially if you have dry skin – “NMF is your best defense against dryness, because it’s able to absorb moisture from the atmosphere and bind it to your skin. If you suffer from dry, flaky skin, inflammation or eczema, NMF might be your new best friend.”
Common Components of NMF
NMF is the skin’s self moisturizing gift from the Creator, however, if you have dry or sensitive skin, then you would need to achieve an ideal NMF content to assist the epidermis in hydration.
Using moisturizing serums, lotions, creams and butters that contain NMF will support the structure of your skin, allowing it to self repair and regenerate without having to deal with obstacles brought on when skin is suffering from dryness, hormones, irritation, stress or pollution.
Common components of NMF are: Amino acids, ceramides, hyaluronic acid, cholesterol, fatty acids, triglycerides, phospholipids, glycosphingolipids, urea, linoleic acid, glycosaminoglycans, glycerin, mucopolysaccharide and sodium PCA (pyrrolidone carboxylic acid).
Some oils would work with the NMF above to reduce evaporation, lubricate the surface of skin and smooth it: apricot oil, beeswax, canola oil, cocoa butter, coconut oil, corn oil, jojoba oil, jojoba wax, lanolin, lecithin, olive oil, safflower oil, sesame oil, shea butter, soybean oil, squalane and sweet almond oil.
