Cosmetic Ingredients Class: Licorice Extract 101

Class is in session! Part of a healthy skin care journey involves understanding which cosmetic ingredients will actually help your skin.

Last week, I mentioned licorice extract to be a great ingredient in skin brightening. Licorice extract contains glabridin which inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme that is responsible for creating melanin. This makes it quite useful in a skin brightening regimen.

Benefits of Licorice Extract

  1. It brightens dark spots by blocking the formation of excess melanin.
  2. It is anti inflammatory. The ability of licorice extract to gently suppress the formation of excess melanin is essential because inflammation and irritation could lead to an unwanted increase in melanin production.

How to Include Licorice Extract in Skin Care

Since it only blocks the formation of melanin, licorice extract works best with other skin brightening actives: an ingredient which disrupts the transfer of melanin and an exfoliator.

The ‘anti transfer’ ingredient will block the transfer of melanocytes carrying less concentrated melanin and the exfoliator will remove the skin cells that are already hyper pigmented.
